What's everyone's thoughts on being able to change around a player's salary structure on a year to year basis when you sign them?
Example:
You win Player A on a bid of $20M for 3 years. You can have three different ways to structure the player's contract:
(These salaries are purely hypothetical and not subjected to a specific equation that would be the rule)
As you can see all of these contracts average out to $20M a year. If there's interest I think a few things would need to be addressed.
1. When should you post your contract structure?
My response: Within 24 hours of your bid being the winning bid you must post your desired contract structure if you want to do something different than the same salary each year. You can have the options to: post your desired ascending or descending structure, post you want the same salary each year, or if you don't respond within 24 hours your player will be given a contract with the same salary each year and you will not be able to change the structure due to not posting within 24 hours. Do not post the structure of the contract during the bidding war.
2. How much fluctuation can there be on a year to year basis?
My response: I did not come up with a single percentage, per se, of difference that there can be. I don't think you should be able to structure the contract above in a manner that the player makes: Year 1-$1M, Year 2-$29.5M, and Year 3-$29.5M. I would like to think we can be mature/serious enough to not post something totally outlandish. I think it should be on a judgement basis from an LM placing the contract in the master sheet of whether the contract needs to be addressed.
3. What happens if an LM believes a contract is completely disproportionate and should be addressed?
My response: The player's contract could be posted with a poll. A certain number of people in our league must vote on the contract and whether they believe it is fair or unfair. However while this process is going on, the team that won the bid for the player is able to roster that player. Also, it should be assumed by everyone that wins a bid for a player that they are at least willing to pay the player's contract with the same salary each year.
For example: The A's win a bid for Player B and post a contract that is flagged by and LM and voted as overall unfair. The A's are not able to just simply drop the contract. They are accepting from the beginning that they must at least be willing to pay the contract with the same annual salary.
4. What happens if the contract is voted against in the league-wide vote?
The winning team has one chance to post a new contract. The LM would decide if they believe this is more fair and then would follow the procedure as stated above. If the contract is overall deemed as disproportionate again then that player will automatically be given a contract structured with the same annual salary.
What are your guys' thoughts? Additionally, LMs: would this be too much extra work if this idea were of any interest? If there's interest and anything I can do to help I'd be happy to.
Thanks everyone!
