but if nothing gets done after the last game and prior to the start of the new season, i.e. the contract draft, we must be in a limbo period right now....

Basically extensions are available anytime with the exception of the period from the all star break until the last regular season game. Anytime before that guys are eligible, and after the last regular season game ends that's the end of the season and if a player doesn't have a contract (or option) for the next year, they become a free agent.
For example, I had Justin Turner on my roster signed at 0.1M for 2015. I also didn't have any extensions available in 2015 as I'd used them all. If I had, I could have extended him at 0.1M + the player increase based off the rankings in 2014. However, since I didn't his contract has expired and he's a FA gone from my roster into the FA pool. I can bid on him through there, but we won't have a start date for free agency until we get the new ESPN league set up in the new year.

I'm not sure if we are saying the same thing or not. Players entering the final year of the contract CANNOT be extended the same way as players not entering the final year of their contract. The rule difference is that players entering the final year of their contract (or 2016) in this years case must be extended prior to opening day or the will be free agents next year. Players that had their contracts expire in 2015 cannot be extended because they would have had to be extended prior to opening day 2015. Players that do not have their contract expire in 2016, can be extended after opening day with a cutoff of the All Star break with their extension based on the year end 2015 player rater. I got the sense that Dbacks were clarfiying that you could extend cotnracts that end in 2016 after Opening Day. But that is not consistent with the rules that we have played by up to this point. mlbgeneralmanager.proboards.com/thread/2117/proposed-player-extensions-rule-clarification

Y'see this is why Rowdy's super useful to the league, he fills in all the gaps that I may have missed in my own knowledge.
We're definitely in agreement on one thing - if a player's contract expires in 2015 they can't be extended at this point, they're a free agent. People can put up a poll if they want to make a change to that rule and put it to a vote, but I'm not in favor of that right now. If a poll gets majority support we can look at changing things for next offseason but not for this year.
As for players who's contracts expire after 2016, I was sure we had seen examples of in-season extensions of expiring players (before the ASB) at least one time before, but I could always be imagining that. I would probably argue for a rule change in favor of that but there's lots of time to discuss it.
