If a prospect has not signed an MLB deal (aka an international prospect) they are given a contract upon being called up. The contract is as follows:
$0.300 million - 1st year of the prospect's contract when the player is called up. If a player goes over the 50IP/130AB threshold, teams must decide at the end of the year whether or not they will guarantee the prospects 2nd and 3rd years of the contract or release the player to free agency. If the player does not go over the threshold, the player can be sent down and won't cost a team anything until recalled to the MLB roster.
$0.500 million - 2nd year of the prospect's contract. Not eligible for arbitration or extension, no matter the actual MLB service time of the player.
$1.000 million - 3rd year of the prospect's contract. Eligible for extension after the season ends, no matter the actual MLB service time. Also eligible for arbitration.
Arbitration Year 1 Arbitration Year 2 Arbitration Year 3 Teams have a choice to extend a player anytime after the 3rd year or during arbitration, accept the real life salary of the player for the year, or release the player at no cost (if they haven't signed an extension).
