Probably should have done this before the playoff rounds started, but I'll do a quick guess at who's going to win each matchup. It'd be interesting to see other people's guesses below as well if any of you think different.
Quarterfinals
1. Cardinals vs 8. Dodgers - Dodgers have been hot, but Cards have been tops all year. Cardinals to advance.
2. Red Sox vs 7. Cubs - Should be a close matchup. Red Sox get Steven Wright back, Cubs get A.J. Pollock back. Red Sox have more pitching so I'll give them the matchup. Red Sox advance.
3. Pirates vs 6. Royals - Pirates have made the finals every year, won 2 of 3. These two teams virtually tied in points scored, yet are separated by 3 spots. I could easily be wrong but I think just like the Royals beat the Pirates on the bidding for Boyd, they'll win the matchup too. Royals advance.
4. Diamondbacks vs 5. Nationals - I think I'll take this. Would be much closer but Nationals lost Strasburg & Matz to injury and Sanchez to demotion. Bad timing on pitching injuries. Diamondbacks to advance.
Semi-Finals
1. Cardinals vs 4. Diamondbacks
Would have loved for this to be a final. 2 of the top 3 teams in points for all year. Tough to call, but my injuries to Lackey, McCullers, Davis might make the difference. Cards probably advance to defend their title, but it'll be close.
2. Red Sox vs 6. Royals
The other 2 of top 4 scoring teams. There's always been at least one division winner in the finals of this league. Back when we had 4 divisions that was a little easier with 4 chances - now it'll be really rare. I think this year will be one of the only years where the two division winners meet. Red Sox back to the finals after a couple year drought.
Consolation
4. Diamondbacks vs 6. Royals
Diamondbacks to be 3rd for a 2nd straight year. Always a bridesmaid, never the bride.
Finals
1. Cardinals vs 2. Red Sox
Defending champ vs second highest scoring team. This will depend on pitching and injuries, as always. Tough to pick against the defending champ and team that's won 16 weeks in a row, so I won't do it. Cardinals will defend their championship. For the rest of us, there's always next year!
Thanks for a great year everybody. Good luck in the playoffs!
