Probably should have done this before the playoff rounds started, but I'll do a quick guess at who's going to win each matchup. It'd be interesting to see other people's guesses below as well if any of you think different.
Quarterfinals
1. Cubs vs 8. Mariners - Mariners held on the last day of the season, getting the last playoff spot based on points for over the White Sox. A very solid offensive team but just too many pitching injuries to take on the Cubs juggernaught. Cubs to advance.
2. Red Sox vs 7. Royals - Eric Hosmer has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball since April, and Carlos Rodon may be breaking out. However, Red Sox just lost to the Cubs in what may be a finals preview - are they vulnerable? If KC hadn't just lost Bellinger and Gallo it may be closer. In my books Bellinger is the rookie of the year. Red Sox to advance in a close matchup.
3. Pirates vs 6. Nationals - Judge has cooled off and Matz is out for the season with an elbow issue. Meanwhile, Paul Goldschmidt is cementing his case as NL and Fantasy MVP. Pirates to advance.
4. Cardinals vs 5. Diamondbacks - Two teams with DLs a mile long. Correa, Kipnis, McCann, Conforto, Scherzer, Urias, Rosenthal, Faria, Ross, Miller, and Karns vs Belt, Russell, Eaton, Bird, Werth, McCullers, Syndergaard, and Thompson. Two teams separated this year by only 1 win in the standings and 6.5 points for. Too close to call but I think my DL isn't quite as bad and I manage to squeak one out.
Semi-Finals
1. Cubs vs 5. Diamondbacks
Is this the year I finally move past a semi-final into the finals??
Hint: probably not unless I get healthy fast. Cubs are too good.
Cubs to advance and DBacks back to the consolation game for the 3rd year in a row.
2. Red Sox vs 3. Pirates
A rematch of a prior finals matchup from a few years ago. Pirates offense is better, Red Sox pitching is a little better I think. Pirates need to hope Alex Wood comes back quick and that their young pitching turns it back around because Taillon and Manaea have been slumping. I think Pirates have a shot but that the defending champs make it back into the finals. Red Sox to advance.
Consolation
3. Pirates vs 5. Diamondbacks
Pirates are the better team but I`m betting I get 3rd again for the 3rd year in a row. Things just seem to come in threes.
Finals
1. Cubs vs 2. Red Sox
Defending champ vs second highest scoring team. This will depend on pitching and injuries, as always. Tough to pick against the defending champ but in the finals preview in the last week (and the battle for the number one seed) the Cubs came out on top, so I`ll pick them to go all the way.
Thanks for a great year everybody. Good luck in the playoffs!
